How-to: Wavy Hair

I wanted to share this short video where I demonstrate a new technique I have been using when I want to wear my hair wavy! I’m using the Revlon Pro Collection 1″ Soft Feel Curling Iron.

I like to use specific products when I heat style my hair. I always use a leave in conditioner or oil when I get out of the shower. My favorites right now are R+Co’s High Dive Leave in Moisture Creme [1] and Ouai’s Rose Hair & Body Oil [3]. Both smell amazing. I try to always use a heat protecting spray and the Hot Toddy Heat Protecant Mist by Dry Bar [4] has such a fine mist it doesn’t feel like anythings on your hair. If I want to pull my hair back without messing up my waves I’ll use a silk scrunchie. I got a pack of 5 Satin Sleep Scrunchies by the brand Kitsch [2] from Ulta.

Skin & Hair Favorites!

I’ve tried out a lot of different skin and hair products lately, and these are ones I love!

The Soap & Glory Sugar Crush Body Wash  [(1) $10] has a great citrus-y scent that leaves me feeling awake and refreshed post-shower. It also has a great lather, easy pump dispenser, and a super affordable price. I wanted to try the Intuition f.a.b. Razor [(2) $15.98] after learning that f.a.b. stands for ‘forward and back’ because this razor shaves in both directions. I love how quickly I can shave my legs when I don’t have to lift the razor off my skin. I have yet to accidentally nick myself and it leaves my legs completely smooth.

I usually stick to drugstore skincare products but I really wanted to try the Olehenriksen Banana Bright Eye Creme [(3) $38] given all the positive reviews. I didn’t realize how dry that area of my skin was until I started using this super rich moisturizer. Over time, the texture around my eyes has become so much smoother. It is very pricey but I’ve been using it daily for about 6 months and I still have 2/3 of the container left!

I’ve found two new hair products recently that have really helped me maintain my hair’s health and color. The IGK Mistress Hydrating Hair Balm [(4) $29] cuts down my blow dry time and leaves my thick wavy hair smooth and soft. I love the gel consistency of this balm; it is not greasy at all and has an amazing coconut scent. Lastly, I have been using the Klorane Vinegar Shine Rinse with Chamomile [(4) $18] to keep my blonde highlights bright between salon visits. Bleached hair tends to pick up unwanted tones over time since the cuticle of the hair has been opened up. When you wash your hair with unfiltered water the minerals in the water can build up under the cuticle of your bleached hair and make it look brassy over time. I use this vinegar rinse (diluted in water as per the instructions) at the very end of my shower to remove any mineral buildup that may have occurred. It also leaves hair shiny and tangle-free.

Fashion Trends to Try This Summer!

Cowboy Boots  My favorite new purchase for the summer is hands down my Topshop western boots ($125). I can easily pair them with any dress for the perfect summer outfit!

Cat Eye Sunglasses  I love these bright red cat eye sunglasses from American Eagle ($10). They look super cute and retro with high waist shorts and a tie-up top.

Midi & Maxi Dresses  Longer dresses always look effortless and chic. I especially love them for a bohemian ‘free spirit’ look which is very fitting for the summer. My favorite midi dress, from Free People ($70), is also super comfortable.

Summer Beauty Favorites

My go-to summer look for a subtle bronze-y glow is super quick and easy! Typically I just use a small amount of concealer to cover the dark circles under my eyes. I love the concealing power and skin-like finish of the Laura Mercier Flawless Fusion Concealer [(3) $28]. Then I’ll add a bronzer with a tiny bit of shimmer in it, like the Becca Sunlit Bronzer [(4) shade ‘bronzed bondi’ $38]to my cheeks and dust the leftover product across my nose, forehead, and basically just my entire face.

For my eyes I just use my finger to press a shimmery eyeshadow all over my lid, I love the gold and peach shades in the ColourPop ‘Yes Please!’ Eyeshadow Palette [(1) $16]  and the CYO Metallic Eyeshadow Singles [(5) shades ‘cooeey’ & ‘lovey dovey’ $4/ea; available at Walgreen’s].  I finish up the eyes by curling my eyelashes. I get a dramatic effect with the Kevin Auccoin Lash Curler [(6) $21]  that can get right up to my lashline. I make sure to squeeze down firmly 2 or 3 times on each eye to crimp my eyelashes at the root so they stand straight up. I haven’t found the need to use mascara since I started tinting my naturally blonde eyelashes black myself a few years ago (I can write more about how I do this too!).

Finally I use a super moisturizing glossy lip product like the Lanolips Tinted Balm [(2) shade ‘rose’ $13.50]  which is unbelievably moisturizing and pigmented at the same time.

My Apartment & Staying Organized (Pre-Spring Cleaning!)

I love my little bachelorette pad. Living in a newer construction building has lots of perks (floor to ceiling windows are everything)! But the sacrifice is definitely space in my studio-plus/ junior one bedroom apartment. Having all of my furniture sized proportionately to the space is key to keeping my main living area looking spacious.

For smaller areas like my entryway and bathroom I try not to take up any of the floor space with extra furniture. Instead I try to find storage that I can attach to wall like the mesh baskets in my bathroom. In my entryway some cubbies for shoes/accessories and a freestanding clothing rack make up for the lack of closet space.

Products: Sofa (Ikea, $399); Fleece throw blanket (Urban Outfitters, $49); Round throw pillow (Urban Outfitters, $39); Coffee table (Ikea, $44.99); Desk (Ikea, $49.99); Desk chair (Ikea, $40); Standing floor mirror (Target, $59.99); Glass jewelry display box (Urban Outfitters, $16); Bed blanket (Target, $49.99); Wall mounted wire baskets & mirror (from the ALGOT system by Ikea); Wall mounted shoe cubbie (Lowe’s, $43.98); Clothing rack (Ikea, $12.99); Doormat (Target, $10.99). Holiday Gift Guide & Last Minute Gift Ideas

When I’m getting holiday gifts for my friends, I want to include everyone but not have to spend a ton of money. So I like to keep it holiday themed- it’s easy, cute, and doesn’t take any advance planning. We get together before Christmas so they can use the gifts before and during the actual holidays too. I got my friends Lush’s limited edition holiday shower gel minis. This year Lush has three different kinds and they all smell so good! (Snow Fairy is my favorite smelling shower gel ever and I stock up during the holidays). I also got these little gingerbread man soaps from a local beauty boutique, Mojo Spa. They are so cute and small enough that you’ll use the whole thing up before Christmas is over and you’re sick of smelling like gingerbread. Finally I picked out some adorable cozy socks from Free People, and I have cool little gifts for my girl friends. I like to Christmas shop at local stores and boutiques. I always find the best stuff that way and don’t have to worrying about online orders or packages being delivered on time.

For my family I love to give something that’s more personal. Since my family members never seem to want anything specific, my goal is always to give them something they’ll actually use-even if it’s something small. For a unique photo gift I like to make stickers, magnets, or little notepads. I made some cute post-it notes featuring the favorite & most loved member of my family (our dog, Toby) a couple years ago. Everyone still keeps them on their desk!

Since I love fashion and beauty, I also like to give my mom and sister skincare and makeup products that I’ve picked out for them. I’ll look at the travel size items or a make-your-own palette like this Anastasia Beverly Hills eye shadow quad. Other ideas for someone who is hard to shop for (like my dad) are food- you can’t go wrong with that person’s favorite dessert, chocolates, wine, or even a gag gift- something just to make them laugh. You’ll always get a better reaction from my dad with a joke gift than a scarf. One year I gave him a ‘Big Lebowski Kit’ from modcloth.com that included a pocket guide of the movies best quotes, rug mouse pad (to really tie your desk together), and a severed toe (fake, of course).

Also I think a future experience you can share together is a great gift to give family, friends, or a significant other. Tickets to see their favorite band or team, a relaxing spa day, rock climbing, vacation– whatever they love that you can do with them!

Happy Holidays 🙂

Winter Favorites:

I basically live in sweaters during the winter and lately I like them oversized, chunky, and cropped like this orange-y gold sweater from Topshop. Or super soft and a little bit slouchy like this color-blocked tunic by Dreamers. Although it’s too cold to wear them alone, I also love to layer these burgundy extra wide fishnet tights from  Free People.

My skin gets so dry in the winter and sometimes I get windburn from being outside so I’ll switch to a gentler face wash and thicker face cream. Philosopys face wash is my absolute favorite face wash for all skin types that never leaves my face feeling dry. Recently, I found this face lotion by First Aid Beauty with an active skin protectant ingredient and oatmeal that is amazing for protecting my skin from the winter wind.

Lastly, a hair product that I recently discovered is this moisture and shine cream by the brand R & Co. My hair dresser used it on my hair once and my hair never felt so soft. I also love that it can be used on damp hair whether you are going to use a blow dryer or let it air dry and it leaves hair smooth and soft either way.

End of Summer Style, Skincare & Beauty Favorites + More!

I just love anything soft and feminine looking so I am loving seeing SHEER everywhere! Like this dress with mesh panels and cool netting overlay from Topshop (which I think is both adorable and wedding-guest appropriate) and this pastel sheer glitter tee has me nostalgic for the 90s and Limited Too (R.I.P.). My favorite though is definitely this embroidered mesh top a la For Love and Lemons– but not quite as pricey.

90s Glitter has made a comeback in makeup as well. I don’t usually wear shimmery makeup but I had to make an exception for this ridiculously glittery liquid eyeshadow by Stila. I like use my finger to pat it on my actual eyelid only (the part that moves when you blink) for eyes that look subtle but sparkle every time you blink.

One of my recent skincare discoveries is the kale, spinach + green tea face wash and moisturizer by brand Youth to the People. The gel cleanser is nice and refreshing and the moisturizer is very lightweight- perfect for summer!
